Annotation: Today, Manhattan’s Little Italy is situated along Mulberry Street, which also abuts Chinatown. Historically, Little Italy comprised a much larger area of Manhattan, but Chinatown quickly absorbed large portions of the neighborhood as immigrants from China and other Asian countries moved into the area. Populations maintained their customs, cultures and cuisine. This photograph depicts how neighborhoods in the Lower East side of New York peddled their wares, bringing their world to their neighborhood.
