Annotation: By the 1880's, steam powered ships drastically shortened travel time for Europeans immigrating to the United States. Millions of emigrating Italians entered through Ellis Island. Often, entire families immigrated together. Frequently young men traveled alone to find work and later sent for their wives, children and extended families.
