Annotation: This statue of Booker T. Washington (titled “Lifting the Veil”), located on the campus at Tuskegee University, was dedicated in 1922. The inscription at its base reads: "He lifted the veil of ignorance from his people and pointed the way to progress through education and industry." Booker T. Washington was born into slavery, and after emancipation he devoted his life to promoting the advancement of African Americans.
