Annotation: Amiri Baraka founded the Black Arts Repertory Theatre/School (BART/S) in Harlem. BART/S’ mission was to establish "a repertory theatre in Harlem, as well as a school. As a school it would set up and continue to provide instruction, both practical and theoretical, in all new aspects of the dramatic arts." Lack of funding and internal conflict led to its early demise. However, its legacy paved the way for other black theatre/schools, such as the Black House in California and Spirithouse in Newark, New Jersey, to continue to provide political, economic, and cultural activities to the black population.
