Annotation: The gay rights movement started in 1969 with the Stonewall riots in New York City. Police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar, and in response patrons fought back, fueling three days of rioting. Activism spread, and thus began the fight for equal rights and general acceptance of their sexual orientation and identity.
