Annotation: This photograph illustrates the plight of African Americans in inner city New York to find decent housing during the 1950s. Playwrights and authors reflected this theme as well: In his novel Invisible Man, Ralph Ellison wrote about the poor being evicted from their homes; while the play by Lorraine Hansberry, A Raisin in the Sun, centers around the struggle to find housing for African Americans.
