Media type: broadside
Museum Number: LC-DIG-ppmsc-04583
Annotation: This broadside shows a portrait of Emiliano Zapata holding a rifle and advertises the (premature) death of Zapata. Zapata was the most influential revolutionary hero from southern Mexico. In 1911, Zapata, along with Pancho Villa, Pascual Orozco and others peasants, helped Francisco I. Madero overthrow Porfirio Diaz for presidency in the battle at Ciudad Juárez. Later, however, Zapata disagreed with Madero's vague policy of land redistribution. Then in 1913, Victoriano Huerta overthrew Madero, at which time, Zapata supporters increased considerably. Various skirmishes occurred around Cuernavaca due to the confusion suffered by revolutionaries as to which leader to follow--Huerta or Zapata. Because of these skirmishes Zapata's death was advertised prematurely in this broadside. This broadside was published in Mexico City by Antonio Vanegas Arroyo in 1914.
