Before
the war, Colonel Elmer Ellsworth (1837-61) organized the Chicago Zouaves,
a precision drill unit modeled after the French Zouaves of the Crimean
War. In 1860, they toured the North, staging spectacular drill exhibitions
and recruiting members. A naïve painting by J. Graff captured
their visit to Utica, New York.
