Reasons For Hating Japan

In the intermediate grades (grades four, five, and six) the children could think of many reasons for hating the Japanese as a nation or as an army. These reasons for hating Japan are indicated in some detail to show the variety of response in the list of answers to a test question, "Which enemy do you dislike most? Why?"

The following reasons were expressed by some of the children: Because of Pearl Harbor. They are uncivilized. They torture other men. They kill women and children. They burned Pearl Harbor - a sneak attack. Because they are the enemy. They do not fight fair. They cheat. Because they are hard. They are the cruelest and the most unjust .... In response to the test question, "Which enemy do you dislike most? Why?" Some of the children named Germany and gave these reasons: Because they rob other nations. Because they starve and kill their conquered. Because they have captured more countries and kill people for doing nothing. Each block has a spy and children report on their own parents. Because they started it all. It is the source of Naziism. Because it is vile.
